Ready to follow the footsteps of Neapolitan Novels (and super acclaimed tv series) characters on the island of Ischia? We are waiting for you with Elena Ferrante-inspired tours and full day boat excursion around Ischia!
Ischia has always been an iconic destination in Italy, loved and celebrated by painters, writers, directors and many artists who have found inspiration here: and so did Elena Ferrante with her novel "My Brilliant Friend", which is now a super acclaimed tv series on HBO.
The so-called Green Island may have been fallen off the global tourist routes in the last decades, but the HBO series is about to change its destiny: Ischia is going to have a renaissance.
Discover Elena Ferrante's Ischia and "My Brilliant Friend" locations
It all began with Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan Novels, a series of book which takes place in 1950's Naples. The Island of Ischia appears in the first two books, My Brilliant Friend and The Story of a New Name. As we all know, the former is a super acclaimed tv series.
Thanks to the eight-episodes drama, green of the vineyards and lemon trees, turquoise of the sea, and red of the sunset are conquering millions of spectators in Italy as well as in the USA.
Elena Ferrante's 1950's Naples includes the Rione Luzzatti, where the Novels begin, and other renowned locations, such as Piazza del Plebiscito, Piazza dei Martiri, the rich neighborhood of Vomero, the breathtaking Posillipo, and Liceo Garibaldi, where Lenuccia, one of the main characters, went to study.
But some of the most picturesque scenes of My Brilliant Friend take place (of course) in Ischia. The teacher sends Lenuccia to Ischia during the summer to save her from the poverty of her native neighbourhood, and an entire episode, "The Island", is dedicated to her adventures there.
In Ferrante's book, as well as in the TV adaptation, Ischia, with its cobblestone streets, gardens, and blue sea, is a metaphor of freedom and love, and of inspiration and growth.
The HBO series features beautiful scenes in a number of locations, such as:
-
the Aragonese Castle, which shines during the daylight and has a magical atmosphere at night;
-
Ischia Ponte, with its pastel-coloured houses and fishing boats; and
-
the golden sand and deep blue sea of Maronti Beach.
Other places such as Forio, Casamicciola, Lacco Ameno, the Cuotto Village, and Serrara Fontana, with the view of Monte Epomeo, are mentioned in the books.
